Artist Robert Morlan has sculpted a life-size sculpture of the Artist Charles
Rockey. Rockey has been a larger than life presence in Manitou for more than
30 years. He was a teacher for District 11 for over 25 years. He is best known
for his local landscapes and townscapes, as well as his carvings and an array
of many objects of Art.
The figure sculpted by Robert Morlan is in a three-dimensional setting that portrays
Rockey painting on a large canvas in the shape of a storybook. Around the central
figure are a lot of the characters that have come to life in Rockeys paintings, fairies, gnomes, and small animals including "Puppy" Rockey's
small companion of many years. Around the base of the central figure and other
3-dimentional elements (animals and fantasy figures) are large mushrooms to be
used for seating. The thought behind this is that people, children and adults
alike will use this as a gathering place for storytelling, reading or just to
set and observe the sculpture. Rob has been working on the life-size work for
10 years.
The sculpture will be installed at a yet to be determined sight in the city of
Manitou Springs. The Sculpture will be cast in bronze. The photo you see displayed
here is a bronze relief 17 x 12 inches, which will be sold in a limited edition
to raise funds to cast the larger than life size 3 dimensional setting. Currently
the relief may be seen at Manitou Springs Fine Art Castings, Robert and Linda
Morlans foundry at 1136 Manitou Ave. Manitou Springs, Colorado. You may also
call for an appointment. Future plans include a public unveiling of the relief
and fundraising events. The fundraising piece (relief) will sell for $2500 each.
